Have you met our dogs yet?

We have three; a Lab named Tucker, a Miniature Poodle named Bella, and a Toy Poodle named Louie. We didn't set out to have three dogs, they somehow adopted our family - one puppy at a time - and they certainly do make us happy.

My three older kids joke that when each child leaves, my husband and I get a new dog. This certainly wasn't our intention, it just seemed to work out this way.

My dogs follow me all over the house. They sit at my feet when I'm working on the computer, they keep my kitchen clean when I'm testing out new recipes and they seem to know when 6 PM rolls around because they wait anxiously by the back door for my husband to come home.

Tucker, our Lab, is the baby. He totally thinks he's human and can't seem to give us enough love. He's just a big sweetheart.

Bella, our white poodle, is affectionately known as our "cat". I often feel like we are just taking up space in "her" house. She loves us by letting us live here. She's "my" dog and the one we've had the longest and she really is sweet as can be.

Finally we have Louie. Oh, Louie. What can I say, he.is.a.handful.

If there is a such thing as "small-dog syndrome", Louie has got it.

It's funny how each of their personalities are so different.

Because I love these guys, and because they are a big part of our family, I wanted to make them their own special treats and these homemade dog treats sure are special.

I love that these treats are made from real ingredients, nothing artificial added.

Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats

The best part of these homemade dog treats is that they're so easy to make.

Just a few ingredients - whole wheat flour, oats, peanut butter, an egg, chicken broth, a banana, and nonfat dry milk.

These bone-shaped cookie cutters are so cute to use too!  I love that they come in different sizes, perfect for the three sizes of my own dogs.

These homemade dog treats would make great gifts to give other dog lovers in your life.

They keep well in an airtight container in the refrigerator or at room temperature for up to 1 week.

Enjoy!

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour (Substitute all-purpose flour if your dog is allergic to wheat)
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup nonfat dry milk
  • 3/4 cup chicken broth
  • 1 whole egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/3 cup natural peanut butter

  • Stir in the chicken broth, egg and peanut butter.
  • Fold in the banana.
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. If the dough is too sticky, add an additional 1/4 cup flour until the dough is easier to handle. Use your hands to work in the flour.
  • Flatten the dough with a floured rolling pin to about 1/2-inch thickness.
  • Cut with cookie cutters or cut into slices and place on parchment lined baking sheet.
  • Bake for 15 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and allow to cool before giving to your dog.

These dog treats will be slightly soft.  If you leave them in the oven longer than the 15 minutes baking time, they will get harder - just be sure to keep a close eye on them so that they don't burn.
