Our love for sprinkles and colored sugar runs deep. It seems I’m always dusting sugar cookies with a hearty sprinkling to make them colorful. When my daughter was little, a bit of colored sugar was a necessity over her morning oatmeal and she still loves to sprinkle a little into her vanilla yogurt.
As you know, you can’t beat the store bought colored sugars for convenience, but heck, those little bottles add up in price. If you’ve got a couple of minutes, a few ziplock bags and a bottle or two of food coloring, you can make your own colored sugar in no time.
Simply pour a little sugar into a ziplock bag and add a couple of drops of food coloring to the sugar.
Seal the bag and gently massage the sugar with your fingers until the color is mixed through. You can continue to add a drop of food coloring at a time until you get your desired shade.
Continue to rub the sugar between your fingers until all the clumps are out.
You see…pretty simple huh? The sugar keeps well in these baggies if you’ll be using it within a week, but if you plan on keeping it longer, put the sugar in a plastic container and store it in your pantry.
Last week, I made a decadent King Cake Monkey Bread and quickly made yellow, green and purple sprinkles to sprinkle on top. Combine colors to get the color you want.

Fun! I never thought of doing this. That cake looks delicious! Very Mardi Gras!
