There are three very special things I love about hand pies. One, hand pies are so easy to make. You get the satisfaction of eating a delicious pie without all the fuss. Another thing I love is the fact that you don’t need a plate and fork. Just pick them up and eat them with your hands. The third thing I love about this particular recipe for hand pies is that there is no need to make a dough crust. I went the easy route and used Pillsbury’s pre-made pie dough. This delicious dough gives these pies a light and flaky crust. Simply open the package and roll out the dough which is then ready to cut into shapes and fill.
These cute little pies are perfect for a Valentine’s Day dessert. I found an adorable heart shaped pastry cutter from Sur la Table after Valentine’s Day last year and have been waiting all year to finally use it.
Using the pre-made pie dough makes this dessert so easy to make. Simply unroll the dough and cut the shapes out.
Start out by unwrapping and unrolling the dough.
Use your cookie cutter to cut shapes out of the dough.
Prepare a delicious mixture of chopped apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, flour and lemon juice.
Place a heaping tablespoon of the apple spiced mixture in the center of the dough
Place another piece of dough over the top and seal the ends with the tines of a fork.
Place the pies on a lined baking sheet and brush an egg wash over each pie.
Sprinkle a little sugar over the tops and bake in the oven for about 10 minutes.
Transfer the pies to a rack to cool.
There’s a perfect amount of sweet filling stuffed inside each flaky pastry. This dessert would be perfect to make for your Valentine’s Day celebration.
