It’s summertime again!
For many families it’s time to pack up the car and head out for a family vacation. I look forward all year to getting away with my family. The moment I get back home from one trip, I start to think about the next. I love to travel and the idea of getting all my kids together to have a little quality time and make memories makes me happy. However, if you’ve got kids of different ages, you know how hard it can be to find a travel destination to please everyone. It’s sad when you sometimes need a vacation from your vacation or worse, you wish you’d never spent the money for the trip in the first place. With that in mind, I’ve put together our top summer travel destinations for families.
My husband and I have five children. Their ages are 23,21,19,17 and 12. At this point in our lives it’s getting more difficult to travel together because the older two are out of college and working. But for years, we’ve managed to have some pretty successful trips together even with the huge age differences. Here are a few of our picks for summer travel destinations that are sure to please the entire family.
ANGEL FIRE, NEW MEXICO
Angel Fire is a popular winter destination, however summer in Angel Fire is absolutely beautiful.
Although Angel Fire is a mountain resort popular for skiing, you might be surprised to know there are plenty of summer activities to be found. You can take the ski lift up to the top of the mountain and zipline down through the pines, go white water rafting or even drive into Taos for an Indian Pow wow. If you’re looking to relax a bit, you’ll also find beautiful lakes and rivers which are ideal for fishing. Deer and other wildlife can often be found just outside your door and certainly on one of the many hiking trails through the mountains.
With our large family, we usually rent a house for a week. Since Angel Fire is a winter destination, you will find the cost to rent a house very reasonable. This gives us enough room to stretch out, cook, play games and not feel so confined. The weather in Angel Fire is perfect. Temperatures are usually in the 40’s in the mornings and warms up in the afternoon to around the 90’s, then cools again in the evening.

About a two and a half hour drive away is Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown, Virginia. Experience the story of America’s beginnings at historic Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown. Jamestown is the first “successful” settlement in the United States with replicas of the ships that brought them to America. Yorktown is where the British surrendered to the Colonial Army, bringing an end to the Revolutionary war. You can’t miss the demonstation of firing a cannon! Colonial Williamsburg brings you back in time to life as it was in the the early 1700s. At each location there are lots of hands-on activities for children and interesting sites and things to do for older kids as well. There is also Busch Gardens – Williamsburg in the area if you want to take the family out for a day of wild rides. Jamestown, Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg are in the same area so you can stay at one location and visit one or more locations in a day.
WALT DISNEY WORLD
Of course I had to mention Walt Disney World, our family’s favorite destination of all. We’ve taken our kids to the Walt Disney World parks since they were six months old and it continues to be a place where every member of our family has a great time. There are plenty rides and attractions for children of all ages and certainly a place we love.

NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA
Newport Beach is a wonderful beach community near Los Angeles. The weather is always perfect and there’s no shortage of beautiful scenery. There are plenty of activities for families in and around the area. We love to stay at the Bay Shores Peninsula Hotel in Newport Beach. The Bay Shores Hotel is a lovely place situated between the bay and the coast. The hotel provides sand toys for the kids, cookies in the afternoon and a very nice breakfast in their dining area free of charge. The hotel is centrally located with easy access to many Los Angeles attractions. A few miles away is beautiful Laguna Beach, Disneyland, Legoland and Universal Studios Hollywood.

ESTES PARK, COLORADO
We’ll be traveling to Estes Park next month so we’ll have to give you an update when we return. However, the pictures we’ve seen of the majestic scenery of the Rocky Mountain National Park look gorgeous. We’re renting a cabin a few miles from the city where we’ll be staying for the week and we’re looking forward to hiking, possibly white water rafting, horseback riding and relaxing.
