The Fairview is Austin’s newest Bed & Breakfast. This beautiful Inn is located in the heart of downtown Austin and features Austin’s only entirely gluten-free kitchen!
Escaping the busy city of Houston every now and then is something I love to do. Take this big city girl away from all the traffic and noise for a few days and I come back new and completely refreshed. Fortunately, I don’t have to travel far to get away. The Texas Hill Country is only a short drive away for us and the city of Austin is at it’s very edge.
The vibrant city of Austin is the state capital as well as the “live music capital of the world”. Austin is home to the University of Texas and is quickly becoming a major center for film production. With so many fantastic restaurants and gourmet food trucks, wonderful museums such as the Bullock Texas History Museum and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library and Museum, miles and miles of beautiful trails and parks and tons of great shopping, a visit to Austin always feels good.
A few weeks ago, my family and I visited Austin to watch the daughter of some very good friends of ours perform in the leading role of a play at the University of Texas. Since Austin is only a 3 hour drive from our home in Houston, we thought it would be a great excuse to visit.
Every time we visit Austin, we stumble upon new and exciting discoveries. On this trip, we discovered a beautiful place to stay and one that we hope to return to very soon.
In the heart of downtown Austin and tucked away in a quiet tree-lined neighborhood is the lovely Fairview Inn. The Fairview Inn is a stately old home which has been re-converted into an elegant yet comfortable bed and breakfast. The Fairview Inn is the sort of place that makes you feel like you can completely relax. It’s in the perfect location too. Just four blocks from South Congress and in walking distance to shops and restaurants.
The Fairview is Austin’s newest Bed & Breakfast. Once operated as a Bed & Breakfast by previous owners over 25 years ago, it later became the family home of Jimi and Vivian Ballard. After raising their family in the home, the Ballards decided to renovate and reopen their grand home as a bed & breakfast once again.
Renovated in 2014, the Fairview has become a favorite place to stay for folks visiting Austin for pleasure as well as business. Excellent WiFi and high speed internet via Google Fiber make it the ideal place to stay for business travelers. My husband, who travels a lot, thought the Fairview would be a great place for small groups to stay and work together whether when they are in town for local technology, music or film business.
My husband, our daughter and I wasted no time when we arrived on a Saturday. After strolling around the 1-acre property, my husband and I found a quiet spot in the backyard to enjoy a glass of wine.
The Fairview features:
- 6 luxury guest rooms, including 3 suites.
- En suite bathrooms in every guest room
- Free Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime
- Fresh, Healthy Buffet Breakfast every morning
- Free Parking
- Keyless door locks with unique codes for each guest that unlocks both the doors to the main house as well as the guest room. These are programmed to become active at check-out and will deactivate on checkout.
- Free Wifi all over the property. For me, this was fantastic. There was no wandering around the house and the grounds to see where I could get a connection.
- Google Fiber. Again, this was one of the things I loved about the Fairview – extremely fast internet.
- Dog Friendly Accommodations
We stayed in the Live Oak Suite which was beautifully decorated. This majestic suite was perfect for our small family. The large main room of the suite features a King sized bed, a big screen LED TV and a comfortable rocking chair. In the corner is a writing desk which also held a fresh, cool pitcher of lemon water with glasses.
Each of the guest rooms include hypoallergenic, ultra-comfortable beds with all organic mattresses, fine cotton linens and silky pillows and comforters. Each bath comes supplied with luxurious, natural, made-in-Texas hair care products.
Off the Master Bedroom is the Library, which is a separate room with two comfortable chairs and a wall of books to choose from. It can be set up with one or two portable twin beds.
Next to the Library is the quiet Meditation Room with a meditation cushion, yoga mats and books. Finding this room was such a nice surprise for me. I love doing yoga in the mornings and it was wonderful that I didn’t have to bring my own yoga mat. Everything to enjoy a few minutes of quiet, peaceful relaxation is there already.
The large bath features a clawfoot tub that is original to the house and a separate dressing room.
In the morning, breakfast is served in the dining area downstairs. It is served buffet style and everything served is gluten-free! The owners have personally been affected by food sensitivities so they know how important it is for people traveling with similar needs to know that the foods they are eating are safe. The Fairview is the only entirely gluten free Bed & Breakfast in Austin.
In addition, all the ingredients used are fresh, organic and if possible, purchased locally. The food is so delicious, you would never even guess you were eating gluten-free. In fact, if you have any dietary restrictions, the owners would love to know. With a little notice, Vivian can also prepare foods that are nut-free, dairy free, vegetarian, vegan, paleo, and others. Just ask.
A typical breakfast menu consists of…
- Homemade granola made from organic, gluten free oats served with optional mix-ins
- Homemade yogurt
- Fresh fruit salad prepared fresh each morning with as much organic produce as possible
- Hard boiled, local, organic, pasture-raised eggs
- Freshly baked muffins or scones
Just off the dining room is the butler’s pantry so guests can enjoy coffee or tea all day long. Fancy a cappuccino instead? Not a problem, at the push of a button you can prepare your own delicious cappuccino, espresso or latte.
My visit to Fairview Austin is one I will not forget. I can’t wait to return to the inn in the spring or summer to experience more of what the inn has to offer and to visit a few of the many shops and restaurants nearby. Escape the city and visit a part of Austin you might not expect while enjoying luxury accommodations and fantastic food.
Disclosure: The Fairview Austin provided a complimentary one-night stay plus breakfast so that I would be able to experience the Inn and share my experience with ZagLeft readers. ZagLeft maintains full editorial control of the content published on this site. As always, all opinions are my own.
