Some things never change. As a mother of five children, a few of whom are quite grown, I’ve seen my fair share of childish squabbles. The back and forth bickering banter I remember seeing as a young mother, I find funny to be watching again as a mother of ahem, 20-somethings. My husband and I have had the pleasure of having our second oldest son and our daughter home for the last several months. I’d like to be able to tell you it’s been absolutely wonderful and blissful and totally peaceful, but that wouldn’t be entirely true. Yes, it has been great. I love their company and it’s fun spending time with them, but it’s funny how kids, no matter how old, seem to revert back to their place in the family. You’ve got the “teaser”, the “one who knows everything”, the “sloppy one”, the “neat one”, etc. They go off to work or college and live their lives and when they come home they have no trouble easing back into their “roles”. It’s been interesting for sure and I know I’m going to (mostly) miss them terribly when they leave. The one thing I know I won’t miss is the banter back and forth. Gosh, it never changes and still drives me crazy.
Word of warning to all you young parents out there, it doesn’t end when they’re grown. You’ve been warned…
The other evening we had dinner as a family outside on our patio. The weather was nice and we grilled burgers and sat outside talking and laughing together. It’s the moments like these when I don’t want them to leave. Food brings our family together and no matter what issues we have in the past, eating together smooths things out. We chatted about our son’s new job offer he received earlier in the day and our daughter’s upcoming travel plans. Sitting down together at the table erases many of the negatives of the day.
I found a recipe in the March 2013 issue of Bon Appetit magazine for Sweet Potato Wedges with Lime Mayo that I thought would be a fun recipe to make and serve with the burgers. The roasted sweet potatoes were delicious. I tossed the sweet potato wedges in a mixture of olive oil, salt and pepper then roasted them in the oven. Gosh, they were good! But the lime mayo was certainly the star of this dish. Mayonnaise with a tangy burst of citrus was the perfect accompaniment to the sweet potato wedges. My husband even added a dollop of lime mayo to his burger. I’d even bet the lime mayo would be great as a vegetable dip.
After dinner, my husband and I sat outside while the kids cleaned the kitchen. We sipped our wine and laughed at it all. We actually think our kids like the back and forth bantering between them. They enjoy the playful teasing and I think it pleases them just a bit when they realize it gets under my skin.

Sweet Potato Wedges With Lime Mayo
- 3 sweet potatoes, peeled, each cut lengthwise into 8 wedges
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- kosher salt and pepper
- 1/3 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 tsp lime zest, finely grated
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
- fresh cilantro, chopped
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
- Toss sweet potatoes in oil on a baking sheet; season with salt and pepper
- Place in the oven and roast, turning once, until golden brown, 25-30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, in a small bowl, whisk mayonnaise, lime zest and juice.
- When the potatoes are done, season with additional salt and top with cilantro.
- Serve with lime mayo for dipping.
